Summary
A stunning, south facing, waterside home with a fascinating history.
The Old Kiln was built around and atop an 18th Century Lime Kiln, which remains visible to this day at ground level. The building was commissioned by letter, in 1968, by Miss Shaw, who at the time was working in Africa as a missionary. After lying vacant for five years, the current owners have lovingly restored this postmodern building, creating a truly exceptional, boutique holiday home for up to six.
A striking property of architectural merit, a distinctive wave-form roof caps a wall of glazing, allowing for 180-degree views of the waterside. Floor to ceiling windows within the vast open plan living area bring the activity of the creek into full view. You’ll delight in watching the world of nature go by from indoors, or from the extensive balcony that runs along the front of the building.
Enjoy unwinding in the sublimely beautiful interior, from sumptuous, panelled bedrooms to luxurious, Fired Earth bathrooms. With underfloor heating in the living area and a wood burning stove, toasty toes are guaranteed.
Outdoors, a balcony runs along the full width of the building and wraps around the western perimeter to a considerable decking and paved area with seating and a barbecue. There is a veranda with seating and an outside heater to allow you to watch the sun go down over the village as the day draws to a close.
The terraced garden comes off the living space and is a natural sun-trap with several areas to relax in with the sounds of the birds that inhabit the canopy above. This enchanting garden has river views and a wonderful array of trees and shrubs. Two secluded sundecks are drenched with morning sun on the eastern side of the house, and a further raised deck on the top level of the terraced garden gives views over the river.
Paddle upstream in one of the two kayaks available to hire from Port Navas Yacht Club, at a pace in tune with our holiday and discover your secret picnic spot. Rent a boat or bring your own to moor at Port Navas Yacht Club and take the whole family to Tremayne Quay for a sundowner barbecue, crabbing nets and all. Delicious food is to be sampled at the Port Navas Yacht Club, with its convivial atmosphere, just a stone’s throw from The Old Kiln.
Technology can be forgotten at The Old Kiln as you revel in your natural surroundings, perhaps submerged in the written word with time made for you. This is a property with a uniquely textured narrative to which the story of your holiday can be interwoven.
You may just never want to leave…

Location and Surrounding Area
The quay at Port Navas Yacht Club and The Old Kiln were part of a thriving river business in the 19th Century. Ships brought in lime which was fired in the kilns to be used on the fields as fertiliser, whilst cut granite was shipped from here back up to London and elsewhere. Cut granite from Port Navas and local quarries in the area made up the base for Nelson’s Column, and large parts of London Embankment. The wall nestled between The Old Kiln and Port Navas Yacht Club was once part of the gantry used to put granite into the holds of waiting ships.
Hustle and bustle is now a thing of the past in Port Navas, and it’s industrious former life exists only in traces within buildings and words within textbooks. To be in Port Navas today is to be within one of the most peaceful idylls of Cornwall, where ancient woodland and water meet in a hush of tranquil sounds. The ebb and flow of the tide, the wind through leaves, the gentle pacing of an egret along the shore.
Port Navas Yacht Club is your local watering hole. This little gem on the edge of Port Navas creek serves great food and drink but booking a table in the restaurant ahead is almost always necessary. Dogs and children welcome.
Twenty minutes from Falmouth Town, with its eateries and coffee shops, Port Navas is also within easy reach of either Constantine or Mawnan Smith village both with local shops and pubs. Nearby you’ll also find the Trengilly Wartha Inn serving delicious pub lunches.
