Described as a ‘hidden gem’ and a ‘knockout surprise’, CAST Café on Penrose Road in Helston is growing its reputation for simple, honest food served by lovely locals.
Open five days a week and fully licenced, CAST Café is open for breakfast and lunch Tuesday to Saturday, with late openings on Thursday and Friday evenings. The Café also hosts suppers in association with screenings and special events and is available for hire outside of regular opening hours.
The menu is designed on what is available from local producers at any given week. Chef-manager Dominic Baileys notes that he uses ‘pretty much exclusively local producers- there’s very little imported goods. It’s very seasonal, we’re doing things you can’t find in other places in Helston.’ The fish is from Kernow Sashimi close to St Martin and the meat from C&E Retallack Butchers on The Lizard. Dominic also has a strong commitment to reducing food miles and waste.
The eatery also presents its own programme of CAST Café events, including occasional tango ‘milonga’ nights, where dancers from across Cornwall, Devon and the southwest descend on Helston for a night of dancing and feasting.
The Café is part of the CAST building as a whole, which also houses artist studios and puts on a range of community events.
