Helford River
Wake up before the family and steal a moment beside the water at Durgan. With coffee in hand, watch the morning light play upon the water of the Helford River and listen to the lapping of waves. Here you can plan the day’s adventures, or simply revel in the peace of this special place as nature slowly wakens around you.
Rose Cottage 1 offers a unique opportunity to holiday in a most idyllic setting. Settled into the tiny hamlet of Durgan, with a beach just moments from the front door, a few small steps will take you right to where you want to be. A large open-plan kitchen and living area makes any moment a social family experience. Connect over coffee and share in the excitement of the day to come – or take a picnic breakfast to the beach, or out to the comfort of the shared courtyard garden.
With the Helford River a literal stone’s throw away, Rose Cottage 1 is ideal for a holiday spent on the water. Take a kayaking tour of the river and see the diversity of nature first hand, or book ahead to use the rowing boat at the cottage. Or you are welcome to bring your own. Wetsuits and swimming costumes are sure to be well used here, and the drying cupboard guarantees they’ll cosy and ready to go for every escapade. Following which, any chills or aches you might have from your day’s activities will soon vanish after an evening spent beside the gorgeous woodburner, set within a traditional stone fireplace.
And as the light fades and thoughts turn to sleep, the river then falls still. Sink into the comfort of your bed and dream of the days ahead played out to a soundtrack of the sea. Then, with the window ajar and the soft sounds of the water to soothe you, fall into the deepest and most restful of sleeps.

There are few places in Cornwall more idyllic than Durgan, a heavenly hamlet on the Helford River where time has stood still for many years. With just seventeen houses nestled between ancient woodland and the beach, with its clear, sheltered waters stretching out, it’s no wonder our guests return to Durgan time and time again.
A walk along the coast path leads you through secret beaches and secluded coves to Helford Passage and the Ferryboat Inn. Recently renovated and serving scrumptious food and drink, it has a terrace outside for al-fresco dining in summer, and a roaring fire inside to warm your toes during winter.
Boats and kayaks can be hired from Helford Passage for excursions on the waters of the Helford River. Upriver, and accessible by ferry from Helford Passage, you’ll find Frenchman’s Creek, immortalised by Daphne Du Maurier and her novel of the same name. Anyone lucky enough to explore this part of the Helford will be in no doubt as to why she found it so inspiring.
A pathway up the valley behind Durgan leads to Glendurgan, a subtropical National Trust garden. Here you’ll find a twisting laurel maze and plenty of fun to be had on the rope swing – just don’t forget to stop and admire all the rare botanicals as you go. Trebah Gardens next door hosts regular live entertainment throughout summer in its open air amphitheatre.
This part of Cornwall is one of the county’s most dog-friendly, and pets will love the walk to nearby Grebe beach, which welcomes four-legged friends all year round.
Head into Falmouth for a change of pace and enjoy the vibrancy of this nearby harbour town. With a growing reputation for food and drink, there something for all tastes. The cobbled Old High Street is lined with independent coffee shops, specialist retailers and art galleries. And from here you’ll be able to venture out onto the water with ease, by ferry, boat hire, or even on a paddleboard from WeSUP, found on Gyllyngvase beach.

- October 2024
Rose Cottage 1 is lovely with a great view over the slipway down to the Helford river. Durgan can get very busy during the day - the SW coastal path goes through it and it is the bottom of the Glendurgan gardens. We found it calmed down around 5pm. On the whole it is well furnished with more than enough crockery, cutlery and glasses. The bed was very comfortable. Good shower. A couple of let downs - the toaster tabs to go down are missing, bare metal, and a dated radio/music player. Whilst it was handy having a drying cupboard the bottom tray couldn't be removed when it filled with water from wetsuits. A torch would have been handy, or advice to bring a touch as no outside lighting once away from the property.
